EDMUND AVENUE CULTURAL PRECINCT

PAST AND FUTURE CONVERGE IN A LOCAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
The Unley Museum Expansion is a bold yet sensitive transformation of three historic cottages into a connected Cultural Precinct in the heart of Unley. Following the earlier completion of the adjacent Enterprise Precinct, GGA was pleased to complete council’s long-term vision for the iconic row of cottages.
The striking new gallery addition is an eye-catching form, making a contemporary statement befitting of an award-winning museum. Its zig-zag form continues and inverts the roofline of Stage 1, with the modest addition and thoughtful materiality respecting the low-scale surroundings and heritage stonework. It’s a building with its own identity, yet clearly part of a larger whole. Once the township’s first fire station, the original use is highlighted through red accents and restored fixtures. Backlit perforated soffits featuring Indigenous artwork continue the celebration of local stories and provide a dramatic backdrop to evening events.
The redevelopment delivers upgraded light- and temperature-controlled gallery and storage facilities, teaching facilities and flexible community areas. The project boosts the Unley Museum’s capacity for larger exhibitions and enriches the Village Green experience, making it a lasting cultural investment for the community.
