Grieve Gillett Architects (GGA) were engaged by DfE to undertake redevelopment works to the Fregon Anangu School as part of the Capital Works Program. Fregon (Kaltjiti) community is situated in the far northwest corner of South Australia in the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. The development of the Fregon Anangu School has occurred in an ad hoc manner over the last 55 years with the majority of the buildings being transportable and not to current standards. GGA worked collaboratively with the school to propose a high-level master plan with focus on a campus approach forming an educational journey throughout the site.

The project is conceived as a modular construction solution. Modular is suited to APY Lands project delivery as it allows remote fabrication, limits time required on site, optimizes construction quality and manages project costs enhancing value for money. The Concept Design has been developed using established generic modular principles married with DIT construction requirements.

A materials palette has been developed to ensure durability and longevity of performance, and internal planning is simple and open maximising flexibility and adaptation of use to suit different teaching and learning modes.

Cultural design consideration is key to the project to encourage communities to recognise, promote and celebrate local Aboriginal heritage, culture and language in the planning of refurbishments and new building facilities. This project incorporates narrative and storytelling as an integrated part of each of the new School buildings through community naming and connected community developed narrative using building artwork.
