STURT BUS INTERCHANGE

STURT BUS INTERCHANGE
As part of the Tonsley Rail extension project, DPTI commissioned Grieve Gillett Architects (GGA) to prepare concept designs for the new bus interchange and links to the new Tonsley line terminus station, designed by GGA.
The Department identified the need for a major bus interchange and Park and Ride car park, adjacent to the Tonsley rail line terminus station, to integrate rail and bus services and better serve Flinders University, Flinders Medical Centre and southern suburbs commuters.
Bus frequency and passenger numbers required extended bus set down and platform lengths. From bus service operational planning and traffic planning, a ring road was developed to define the interchange and streamline bus services and circulation, and minimise impacts of major arterial South and Sturt Roads.
Grieve Gillett Architects designed extended bus platform shelters, in line with design guidelines established for DPTI by GGA, and created sensible and safe linkages across the central park to connect related bus stops. GGA also ensured planning considerations saw the retention of existing significant trees on the site, which created an urban park in the centre of the interchange.
