SOUTHERN EXPRESSWAY DUPLICATION SCHEMATIC DESIGN

Grieve Gillett Architects was involved in a tender for the Southern Expressway Duplication project. The Southern Expressway forms the most southern tip of a major north-south corridor project being undertaken by the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure.


Grieve Gillett Architects’ role in the team was to provide Architectural and Urban Design expertise towards an integrated approach to engineering enhancements of the Southern Expressway. The integration of engineering and urban design elements within the design were guided by the following set of fundamental design principles:
• Facilitate connections, reinforce arrival, departure and transition
• Design with safety paramount
• Celebrate Place and facilitate urban regeneration
• Create successful interfaces
• Reveal the beauty in engineering and celebrate the scale of the freeway appropriately
• Integrate comprehensive environmental outcomes
• Choreography - develop a moving room with a view.
