The client initially approached Grieve Gillett Architects (GGA) to assess the viability of designing a residence for a site subdivided from a larger property which included a heritage listed residence and garden.
The site is bounded on its northern edge by First Creek, scattered with significant and heritage listed trees and is within the local Council area of Burnside.
GGA designed the residence retaining and accommodating all significant and listed trees. The large single storey residence is divided into numerous connected and opposing pavilions to allow flexible planning around trees but also manage form and visual scale. A large overhanging roof reinforces the pavilion form and shades and
protects walls.
Materials palette is restrained and understated using unfinished radially sawn seasoned hardwood and natural zinc cladding. Accommodation includes external and internal living spaces, five bedrooms, ensuites and bathrooms, home theatre, six car garage and swimming pool.
The design accommodated Council requirements for 100 year flood events. GGA successfully managed the Development Application Category 2 process, responses to Council and neighbours to achieve Development Approval.
