HOPGOOD THEATRE REFURBISHMENT

Hopgood Theatre Refurbishment

AGED PERFORMING ARTS VENUE TRANSFORMED INTO A CONTEMPORARY ARTS HUB

Hopgood Theatre is the main performing arts venue servicing Adelaide’s southern suburbs and Fleurieu Peninsula and had not had any upgrades since its opening in the 1970s. Grieve Gillett Architects full refurbishment brings the main auditorium,
secondary performance space, front of house, back of house, theatre technology and amenities up to a contemporary standard for the enjoyment of a new generation.

The main auditorium is once again able to attract major touring acts, with up-to-date lighting, sound, sound booth, acoustics, stage curtains and backdrop fly leads. Providing a safe and accessible venue for all ages was a major priority, addressed through
orchestra pit safety, reticulating previously exposed services, removable seating for additional wheelchair space and adding step-free stage access. New exterior painting and signage and bold use of interior colour and lighting create a sense of drama on
arrival as guests are submerged into the performance space.

Originally devised as part of the Noarlunga TAFE complex, the underutilised lecture theatre underwent transformation into an intimate performance venue to increase revenue and offer rehearsal and breakout space for major hiring events. Previously only
accessible via stairs or through the TAFE, the back-of-house corridor has been given due care in design and security to do double-duty as universal entry. Appropriate soft seating, wheelchair seating space, new cyclorama and LED rewired lighting provides an appealing setting for smaller performances, completing the transformation of the Hopgood Theatre as a flexible and contemporary venue.
