GOOLWA WHARF PRECINCT REVITALISATION

The Goolwa Wharf Upgrade has renewed one of South Australia’s most historically significant riverfronts, balancing complex heritage reconstruction with contemporary needs.
At the heart of the works was the significant Wharf Shed, which required complete dismantling and reconstruction of the State Heritage Listed building to address seismic performance and mitigate possible structural failure. Undertaken in close collaboration with Heritage SA, the process preserves the iconic building while ensuring safety and compliance. GGA’s developed design integrated concealed primary steel structure supplementing the original timber frame future-proofing the structure, its form within the historic precinct. The Wharf Shed provides enhanced amenity serving as the Oscar W paddle steamer terminal and interpretive museum alongside a new café tenancy, enriching the visitor experience.
Signal Point Regional Art and Cultural Centre was upgraded with a new insulated main roof, new riverside deck canopy, climate control, solar systems, and interpretive river exhibition creating a more sustainable and functional home for exhibitions and events. Together with WAX Design, a detailed site analysis and master plan also future-proofed the wider precinct, identifying opportunities for open space, activation, safer access and improved visitor amenities as future funding allows.
