HISTORIC LANDMARK REVITALISED INTO COMMERCIAL WORKPLACE
The Tivoli Hotel (former National Hotel) located in the area known as ‘Little Germany’, is both a State Heritage Place and Local Heritage Place, believed to be the only remaining example of a large ballroom/assembly room connected to a Hotel in South Australia. Grieve Gillett Architects were engaged to revitalise and convert this historic landmark, a building that formerly provided a venue for popular bands such as Cold Chisel, The Divinyls and Paul Kelly, into three bespoke individual and independent commercial office tenancies.
The design team were driven to retain the integrity of the remaining heritage fabric, maintaining the interpretability of the original spaces and celebrating the character of the building. This was achieved by adopting an insertion methodology as the design approach for the project, inserting new openings framed in a contemporary manner,
rather than demolishing original fabric to the full extent.
The two storey fitout contains executive spaces, bookable meeting rooms, an agile mix of assigned, shared and hot-desk options to support activity-based working, quiet rooms and breakout spaces. The new openings provide portals for an open, connected space, whilst also allowing for the original hotel room floorplate to be understood, creating a cohesive design aesthetic and flexible work areas.
