SA Department for Correctional Services (DCS) has been expanding its prisoner accommodation to meet the current state-wide requirement to increase in prisoner numbers within existing facilities. As a direct result, prisoner services also require upgrading and expanding to provide appropriate facilities to suit the growing population and need.
The existing Medical Building at Mobilong Prison required additional staff office accommodation for the expanding staff numbers, matching the expanding prison population. Grieve Gillett Architects (GGA) working with DCS representatives identified an existing under-utilised external courtyard, associated with the Medical Building, as the most appropriate space for expansion of office accommodation with potential for a second storey to house administrative staff and offices. Working collaboratively with an appointed building contractor, GGA explored various building materials and construction methodologies to optimise functionality, security, works programme and value for money. The final construction solution used precast concrete wall panels with LVL timber floor and roof structure as the most efficient method of building within
the prison grounds in an area accessible to prisoners, but with minimal compromises to security.
The completed facility sits comfortably within the existing fabric of the prison buildings, providing administrative office space that is light and airy and highly coveted by prison administration staff.
