TANDANYA ABORIGINAL CULTURAL CENTRE
Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute is housed in the former Electric Lighting and Traction Co. Power Station, erected in 1901. The building is entered on the State Heritage Register and the Register of the National Estate.
The facility is designed to provide a focus and showcase for contemporary Aboriginal Culture. It incorporates a 300 seat theatre, retail sales, cafe, controlled atmosphere galleries, workshops and a 850m2 exhibition hall.
A ‘Rainbow Serpent’ footpath mural, by artist Bluey Roberts, was incorporated as a part of the overall redevelopment of the building’s frontage. Perhaps the most difficult task for all concerned in this project was the balance between user requirements, the capital budget and the interpretation of the heritage values of the building.
