RENMARK TOWN CENTRE URBAN DESIGN FRAMEWORK
Renmark is a major regional town of 9,300 people, located in South Australia’s Riverland region on the banks of the River Murray. In 2005, Renmark Paringa Council prepared an Urban Design Framework (UDF) that focussed on the township of
Renmark. Since then, Council had undertaken upgrades and therefore required a current document to guide future development.
In 2016, Jensen Plus together with Grieve Gillett Architects (GGA) were engaged to prepare an Urban Design Framework that focussed on the town centre, in particular the river front precinct.
Grieve Gillett Architects played a specific role in developing a signage and wayfinding strategy for the town centre. In response to site visits, workshops with Council and benchmarking studies with the design team, GGA proposed a signage and wayfinding strategy that was based on the following principles:
• Create a series of ‘gateways’ into Renmark
• Strengthen sense of place and identity
• Enhance the public domain.
Signage concepts demonstrated ways in which Council could develop a suite of signage elements that were consistent, easy to maintain, robust and sustainable, while reflecting the local landscape of Renmark through appropriate materials.
