Adelaide Women’s Prison (AWP) is the primary placement for female prisoners in South Australia. The facility currently accommodates 176 prisoners with all level security ratings. Following completion of the Early Works Package, Main Works
Package construction commenced to deliver a 40-Bed High Security Accommodation Unit, a new Admissions and Health Centre, an Offender Development Unit and two double-storey Independent Living Units.
With input from DCS representatives, GGA designed the new facilities incorporating the following principles: to provide a normative environment through use of natural light, colour, sound attenuating materials, upholstery, moveable furniture; to bring in nature views to the outside and daylight into the buildings to reduce stress and anxiety; to provide a mixture of indoor and outdoor association spaces maximsing opportunities for positive interactions among prisoners and staff members. Research shows the elements of normalisation are more valued and better looked after by the prisoners, thereby reducing ongoing maintenance cost.
Healing circles, productive gardens, amphitheatres, running tracks, exercise courts, lawn, seating areas have been included in the landscape design to give a choice of space to the occupants.
