TENDER RELEASED FOR SALISBURY HIGH SCHOOL REDEVELOPMENT

The South Australian Government has released the tender for the construction of the Salisbury High School Redevelopment.

In 2018, Grieve Gillett Andersen (GGA) were engaged by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) as Lead Professional Services Contractor (Architecture) to work with the Department for Education (DFE) on the design of a new Visual Arts, Food Technology and English facility.

Salisbury High School has been operational since 1959, with assets dating from this era, a new Performing Arts building (c2009) and most recently STEM upgrades undertaken in 2017. The school has a variety of programmes in various streams, including those with an arts and vocational focus. The brief was to maintain strong links between disciplines, in particular Arts and STEM.

GGA undertook a master planning approach towards the siting of the new building, whilst providing maximum value to enhance the amenity of the school’s existing facilities.

The new Food Technology and Visual Arts building has been designed to connect the heart of the School with the nearby Performing Arts building, and improve the School’s presence within its locality. Its masonry design references the existing 1960s buildings and creates a cohesive, yet contemporary frontage. Outdoor learning spaces are provided off all classrooms, and capture views to the site’s significant gum trees.

Internal spaces have been designed to be flexible in accommodating a range of activities between the disciplines and to allow for visual connections between classrooms. High-level glazing allows light to permeate the spaces throughout much of the day, reducing the power demands, as well as the installation of roof mounted solar panels to produce more solar energy to power the school overall.

Tenders for a select group of building contractors will close before Christmas, with the works expected to be substantially completed in time for the school year in 2021.

GGA is excited to continue working with the team at Salisbury High School, DFE and DPTI, whose collaborative approach has enabled us to meet program and be one of the first schools out to tender!
