Norwood Residence

Norwood Residence involved the complete renovation of an existing cottage and addition of a new building.

The design strategy was to bring the elemental beauty and character of an existing cottage into visibility through the careful placement of a complimentary modern building form. The existing cottage sits as an object in the foreground against the deliberately oversized and monolithic new building.

The owner of the Norwood Residence was interested in using quality materials and finishes across the project. The materials palette is limited but carefully chosen. He wanted to explore the design possibilities of all aspects of the project and this led to some innovative solutions and design outcomes, such as the concealed curtain which creates an extra room for guests, the panelled wall to conceal doors to bedrooms and the custom designed steel fencing.

Design and management of the building work, siteworks and interiors by Grieve Gillett Architects has enabled a consistent and rigorous architectural response to be achieved across the project. The success of the design outcome is evidence of a trusting and fruitful relationship between the Owner and Architects.
