Carr Residence was a unique project given its previous life as a photography laboratory, its city context and the experimental opportunities presented by an architect/owner scenario. Working within the existing building shell, the architect created a walled retreat within a busy city environment.
By strategically offsetting the new building works one metre off the northern boundary, it enabled an abundance of natural light and colour to flood the private spaces created beyond the compliant urban façade. Wherever possible, indoor spaces opened out to external views and courtyards in order to increase the perception of space from a small building footprint.
The extremely efficient layout was aided by clever concealed storage solutions and in turn allowed the architect/owner to deliver an modern family home on a budget.
