The first stage in an ambitious master plan, the Rosary School Jubilee Hall + Courts refurbishment reimagines a generic and typical school court building into a multipurpose hall. Clever reconfiguration and the new addition of a kitchen, quiet
area, office, storage and student amenities now enables the space to be used for school sports and assemblies, OSHC and vacation care as well as community events and functions.
The design process was centred on drawing out the narrative of the ‘birth order and associated characteristics’ of an eldest, middle and youngest child. This enjoyable process – for client and design team alike – provided an accessible way for the client to engage with the design philosophy. The framework enabled Rosary School to reach design outcomes that most closely aligned with the school’s values, one of a mature and caring nature usually associated with the eldest child.
A modest human-scale addition on the front of the building diminishes the ‘big box’ gym appearance and establishes a new friendly presence while accommodating necessary new amenities. The new entry pavilion and kitchen opens onto the resurfaced play and multi-sport court, surrounded by water-sensitive landscaping and soft play areas. Separated from the main campus by a laneway, new sightlines, intuitive wayfinding and playful design elements activate the new development and connect it with the main campus and the broader community.
