The Department for Education sought to expand two of the original 2010 PPP Schools to accommodate the transition of Year 7 students into high school for the start of the 2022 school year. Known collectively as Schools PPP2, Grieve Gillett
Architects worked on both of these projects, one of which was an expansion of Mark Oliphant College.
The Mark Oliphant College site is built in a wagon-wheel style collection of facilities across the site, which allows a clear progression for students as they move from junior primary years around the site to finish in senior school.
Housed in a single additional building, the new facilities provided a number of specialist spaces, including food technology, design & technology, art and science. The collaborative breakout spaces are shared across the disciplines to allow for a cross-flow of ideas and interactions to happen organically.
Being only a decade-old campus, the new works have been designed in keeping with the existing buildings, as if they had been part of the original infrastructure. The additional building provides the opportunity to add articulation to that edge with an appealing street presence.
Working closely with the Head Contractor, Grieve Gillett Architects delivered the works in an extremely compressed time frame. We provided a high level of coordination, working in parallel stages to facilitate the fast-tracked program, while maintaining high quality design and construction standards. GGA achieved further program efficiencies through documentation entirely in Revit, effectively communicating the design intent with clients, stakeholders, consultants, and contractors, eliminating the need for multiple documentation sets.
